OK, so I got two fancy guppies this past Monday as I began to stock my tank.

According to PetSmart, they separate their guppies so they only sell males or females. Anyway, I got home this evening, and I'm watching my little fishies swimming around and I see this wee little thing of a fish. So, I'm wondering, I can't believe that the gestation period for guppies that short. Could I have gotten two females and one was preggers? Also, how many babies do they typically have at one time?

Oh, and when I go to clean the tank, how do I keep from sucking the little bugger up into the syphon?

Guppies are almost always pregnant when they come home from the store. What are you going to do with the babies?

All I can say is to just be careful and work around the fry when cleaning. Or you could net him and put him in a cup until you are done.

yeah, a lot of people get livebearers that are pegnant, and a lot of the time, when pregnant fish are moved, they will either have their babies right away when they get into a new tank, or they will have them much later to get more settled. and the gestation period is around 28 days...around a MONTH!

so, just for a warning, that guppy may have other batches of babies EVEN without a male in the tank! they have litters, and sometimes like 4 batches per mating! ;) hope this helps you out some.

Jocose you didnt actually say what sex your two fish are. Did you buy two fish thinking that they were male or did you actually knowingly buy two females? Or if you have one male and one female then the ratio is unbalanced as the male will continually harass the female and she will become stressed and prone to disease. If this is the case then maybe two more females to take some of the pressure from her would be best.Your female will have more fry in the future and if you want them to survive then you need to add more foliage/floating plants into the tank for the babies to hide in.

It is possible that there were some fry in the tank that they scooped up with your fish...mine drop about 50-60 at a time....
