It looks like I'm finally going to have some success at breeding black calvus. I've been breeding Malawi cichlids for years, so I'm familiar with mouth brooders, but this will be my first chance to work w/ shell dwellers. What are some of my options for raising/removing the fry? The calvus are in a 120g "tang" set up with about 30 fish. Should I just leave them be, or can I remove the shell and place it in one of my grow out tanks? Thanks in advance for the help!

Removing the shell would be best for long term fry survival/growth. I would fill the growout tank with water from the display to prevent sudden chemical change.

Yes you should remove after hatching asap. Most calvus make
poor parents. They don`t share the same parenting skills as other
cichlids. The fry will take almost anything from the beginning.
Good Luck , Keith

Breeding tube.

What I learned from someone i bought my pair of inkfin calvus from was to use PVC pipe. Get like a 1" pipe about 6" long and put a cap on the end. The female in my tank loves it but they havent breed yet. But my people told me that when they do breed all you do is pick up the pipe and dump the water into the grow out tank. Alot easier than scooping up the fry or anyhting.
