okay ive been wondering this for a long time.

what happens if you take shrimp out of the water? do they flop like regular fish? well, obviously they dont flop...but can they jump?!?! out of the water?

No they just stand in the net. But they are sooo hard to get out of the tank. They're so fast.

They won't flop, but depending on the shrimp, they may jump (by lunging with their tails.) I accidentally removed a red cherry shrimp with a plant clipping and it literally hopped out of a drop of water onto my hand (about 6 inches away.)

wow okay thanks. how do they get energy to jump though, if they arent in water? or cant they? lol.

It'll depend on the shrimp. Once out of water, their legs are mostly useless, and they lose the buoyancy of water to keep their weight off their internals. What you usually will see is they look flat out of water cause their shells are literally crushing them. Mine was fortunate to be in a little water so it managed to snap-hop away with a whip of its tail.
I'm guessing some of the larger shrimp (prawns, crayfish, lobsters) can survive out of water for awhile cause their shells are much thicker, but I'd definitely be careful of the aquarium ones (amano's, cherry's, ghost etc..)

I've had them lunge out of the water while trying to catch them. Yesh, they do flatten out once on the carpet...small shrimp can't even hardly move once completely out of water.

Like fballguy, to catch them, I just coax them into something to catch them with. I usually use a clear plastic cup, though.

They can stay on land for a while, atleast my grass shrimps can. In my Paludarium, I see them craw out of the water over the top of the small waterfall and sometimes try to climb into the nozzle of the pump!

i was seeing the same thing as timanator
my shrimps like to climb the driftwood and dive into this little waterfall thingy i have.
also, most shrimps flop when out the water but amano shrimp they will crawl....
