Question regarding Mondo Grass

I recently went to Petsmart looking for a small aquatic plant for my betta's tank... and was misleadingly sold mondo grass. I've since learned that it cannot be completely submerged underwater--is this correct?

I was going to plant it in the tank with my male betta, but as I thought about it, I realized that he already has a small cave and a ceramic tomato (which he sleeps in like a doghouse), and this could perhaps overload the 2.5 gallon he lives in. Is that true, or is it still okay to give him a plant?

Or it could have gone with my female, who is currently in a 1 gallon with two fake plants. But I was afraid it would overload her tank, too.

Or should I just put this mondo grass in a small bowl to itself and leave it out of the tanks, and drop the idea of live plants for now?

Thanks so much in advance. :)

Edit: I posted this in the newbie forum because it seemed like too much of a newbie question for the plant section. My apologies if I'm wrong. :)

Mondo grass is not aquatic. It will die and rot if kept submersed. Try it in your yard. Anubias nana would work quite well, and some of the smaller crypts. Plants won't overload your tank since they do not produce waste like fish. In fact, some fish waste is food for plants and in return the plants produce O2. A win-win situation.

Mondo grass is not an aquatic and will die in your tank. However, I think it can be partially submerged if you want to try that. As for the betta tank, try some floating plants. Bettas love them to build bubble nests and mine likes to sleep in it or just hide out for a while and chill.

hornwort and anacharis are easy to find at your LFS and easy to grow!

PEtco sells somthing called betta bulbs. I saw them, they were cheap so I tried packages of them in my betta 5G. The are nice long leafed plants that grow very fast and my betta loves to swim in and amongst them. I am still really plant challenged so I am not sure what kind they are but they seem to take nothing to grow and flourish. My betta tank is in front of a window (I know not supposed to do that, but I have 5 large windows in my living room, it can't be helped!) I don't even turn the light on in his tank and the plants are everywhere. I highly recommend these, but the only place I have found them is Petco and one online plant seller (can't for the life of me remember who). But try a search on "Betta Bulbs" and you should be able to find them. If anyone knows what type of plants these are, please speak up, I haven't had a chance to look yet :)

I got a 3 pack of "aquarium plant bulbs" (real informative, huh!), that turned out to be water onion, and two aponogetans (sp?). THe apon. are med height, skinny leaves like romain lettuce on stalks, fairly bushy for its size. The onion looks like an onion, very long skinny leaves. I got these at Petco, i think.

I wondered about those bulbs for aquariums--I've seen some at Wal-mart, and I almost bought them that day. But I'm really interested in something that can float, now that it's been mentioned. I guess I need to do some more plant research before I delve into getting something for my betta. :)

Oh, and another problem that I have with getting a plant is... I use glass pebbles for substrate. I can bury roots (as long as they're not twice the length of the plant or something) in this substrate, but I don't know if it's a good kind to keep a plant in. Does it need to be something more natural, like gravel, sand or something like that? Or does it matter?

Also, I've heard that bettas can get tangled and caught in some roots and leaves of plants. Anybody know if that's true?
