I was wondering if someone can give me a little background on Apistos. I am looking to get a show fish for my tank and I love the fact that they stay small and are so brightly colored. Do they pair up like blue rams or should I get one male and several females. Also, how aggressive are they?

They can be kept in pairs or you can keep them in harems, depending on tank size. They can be agressive. Mine killed three panda cories before I removed them. They will chase other fish if they get too close to them, they chase my ottos sometimes, but do not hurt them and they occasionally chase tetras.
They are a great fish to have and for the most part do fine in a community.

i think they are a little more aggressive than a blue ram. i have always kept a few until they pair off, like african cichlids

They are very easy to breed and they should be fairly easy to find. Try to get them from a breeder not an LFS.

What size tank are you talking about putting this apisto in? And what are you planning on keeping w/ them?....I have a beautiful Triple Red Cockatoo Apisto...he can be kindly pushy, but most of the time he hangs out near the bottom and chases his female conpanion around or anyone else that comes into his "territory".

I am looking to get a pair/ 1 male, multiple females(I have read in some places it is better to have more then one female per male) for my planted 20 gallon. My eels will be moved to a different tank but I was planning on keeping my Kuhli loaches in there unless they will be terrorized by the apistos(i do have lots of hiding places.) Other then that, all I have in the tank currently are 5 ottos.

Re To Post

:o Hi plah831 and Bunny 13. Ok apistos can be both agressive and non agressive mostly depends on the fish they all have dif personalitys. I would only recomend 1 species in a 20 gal or smaller. Almost all apistos can be kept in prs though some prefer harams. The harams spreads out the agression between the fish. When they get into breeding mode the females get real agressive/protective of their chosen breeding site some to a point you have to remove the others. When In breeding dress the female apisto is a site to behold the combination of yellow and black can be spectacular also the males colors get awesome. Cacatuoides are a good beginner fish also agassizii there are many color variations of either and both are reasonably available. The most important componant in an apisto tank is hiding places and caves at least 1 cave for ea female and an extra. There are also other apistos with great coloring as a show or center piece I would consider a pr of mcmasterii red shoulder. Also another important factor is gh of 75ppm or less PH is not as important as asertained unless intend on breeding them. If you have any more questions feel free to pm me I keep 16 dif species of apistos and a few other dwarf S.A. species.
Sincerely Curtis
PS look at my photobucket link in my sig when you get to page click on apistogramma album to see some of my apistos.
