It is not so much of an issue now that I am home and on a regular schedule (I can see you all giving me funny looks as I post this at 1AM  I guess I figured all the people with moon lighting would be up watching thier fish now! ) but once I get to school my schedule will be messed up and I will be up until the wee hours of the morning and I would still like to enjoy watching my fish so I have been looking into moon lights. I know most people go for blue LEDs because moon light is bluish however I have also read that some people use red. Why red over blue? I have also seen some people using both red and blue, why? I remember reading somewhere that fish can't see blue light, is that true? What about red? Wow that’s a lot of questions.... :D please feel free to add any tips or advice about moon lights you have! Thanks!

I don't know the answer but I do know that red LEDs tend to be cheaper (although they are only a few cents anyways).
Also I know that you won't ruin your nightvision with light amounts of red light. I don't know if that have anything to do with fish though.

The reason for using blue is that it is the closest the light spectrum of moon light. You can run red lights but they are more for decoration. Most cheap red leds are crap and they do not put out a lot of light. So you can use either one what ever you like best, but blue is more beneficial in marine setups.

I was just wondering, do moonlights cause heat? I have been interested in getting some for my tanks but was not sure if they would create to much heat inside the tank at night. I was thinking about getting them from the below link..

Moonlights

Any takers on this one.

They are LED's and they draw very little power and create no heat. I leave mine on all the time.

Can you explain what you mean buy ruining your night vision? Will blue LEDs ruin it? Is it permanate or just temporary? Thanks!

I've heard that some nocturnal fish such as plecos cannot see red light and many people like to put red LEDs on at night or when it is dark so that they can watch their nocturnal fish be active. Whew, long sentence :D

hvlso heard that many nocturnal fish (specifically catfish) cannot see red light and that red light should be used to watch them when they are active. This makes sense to me as red light is the first to be absorbed by water so the deeper you go, the less red light there is. It would therefore make sense for fish to have less red light vision than blue (I guess). There is also just no red light in moon light so ....

Basically I think the blue light would simulate moon light and the fish would be able to see in a kind of nocturnal twilight while, technically, with the red light you could see them but they couldnt see you ;)

Anyways, just my rant on the topic ....
