Im placing an order online at petmountain.com (seems to be the cheapest i've seen)

I like to order a bunch of stuff at once, to cut on shipping costs and actually save money.

So i wanted to order these and i've heard good things, and they are both real safe to work with... this is correct right?

Anyway, the options are 2 ounce, 4, 8,and 16?

How long will those bottles last me, and what would you recommend to buy so that a) i have enough to use when needed, and b) i don't buy too much

I don't use anything but Pimafix and Melafix. I use them combined together with great results.

As far as how much to buy. I'd say 8 or 16. The 2 and 4 are hardly worth the effort.

I have a a 8 ounce bottle of Melafix I bought a few days ago....It says it treats 474 gallons and the expiration date on it it is April 2010

Hope this give you some idea of how much you think you might need and how long it lasts

PimaFix
Treats cotton-like fungal infections, and both internal and external bacterial infections. PimaFix harnesses the unique antifungal and antibacterial properties of the West Indian Bay Tree (Pimenta racemosa) for a safe and natural remedy; prevents the development of resistant strains of disease-causing organisms. Will not discolor water, affect biological filter, or pH during treatment. Will not harm aquatic plants. For extreme cases, PimaFix can safely be used with MelaFix to provide the added benefit of quick tissue regeneration and wound healing. 8 oz treats 400 gallons.
MelaFix
Contains the natural botanical extract from the Tea Tree (Melaleuca, an excellent alternative to resistant strains of bacteria that are unaffected by traditional medications. Treats bacterial infections such as red ulcers, fin and tail rot, cloudy eyes, mouth fungus, and others in as little as 4 days. Also heals open wounds, ulcers, and damaged fins. Doesn't affect pH; safe for invertebrates. 8 oz treats 480 gallons of marine or freshwater. 64 oz is a concentrated formula and treats 19,000 gallons.

recipes for pimafix and melafix
Melafix is comprised of 1% cajeput oil (Tee Tree Oil can be substituted)
1% emulsifier
.2% defoamer
97.8% H20
so that would translate to 5ml of Tee tree Oil and 500ml of h2o. As there is no emulsifier you must shake the bottle for 1 minute or longer to blend the oil and h2o

Pimafix is 1% Indian Bay Leaf Oil and 99% h2o, same as above
Melafix treats fungal infections, both internal and external bacterial infections. Melafix and Pimafix are formulated to work together. Pimafix will not harm biological filter in fw or sw or ponds, has no effect on ph and is harmless to aquatic plants. Using pimafix and melafix together works on especially stubborn infections plus provides the added benefit of quick tissue regeneration and wound healing. For best results remove activated carbon during treatment.
As a disease treatment add 1 tsp. for every 10g (40l) of aquarium water, repeat dose for 7 days, treatment can be continued. *whenever treating with any meds do a 25-50% water change every 3 days.

Could you please elaborate on how you produce your own I am very interested :thm:

Both Tea tree oil and indian bay leaf oil are sold in most pharmacies (CVS, Rite aid, etc..) and they are the active ingredients in melafix and pimafix respectively, so mixing the right dosages with water will essentially give you the same effect, just cheaper.

Ditto on all of that. I just buy them since I'm too lazy to mix it myself, and I can never remember the ratios when I need them.

But, yes very safe. They are highly recommended for use with puffers because puffers are so sensitive to medications. Melafix and Pimafix are ones that are so gentle that they won't irritate the puffer's scaleless skin. They are also safe for inverts.

The only fish you can't use them with, to my knowledge, are anabantoids (surface breathers) like bettas and gouramis. Because they breath at the surface, the oils get into their gills and prevent them from breathing and can suffocate them.

As to how much to get, it depends on how big the tank you might be treating would be. If you have a large tank, say 75+ gallons, I would get at least an 8 ounce bottle. If it's smaller, say 20g or less, 8 ounces would be fine. Well, I guess either way I'd recommend getting at least 8 ounces. If you need it, then you may find yourself going through a lot of it pretty quickly. On the upswing, it doesn't really expire that I am aware of, so it should be fine sitting for a year or more and still be effective. I would get the biggest bottle in my budget, or the biggest bottle at the best price anyway. Sometimes it's more cost effective to get 2 medium bottles rather than 1 huge one. But, yeah, I would get the most that I could afford.
