Quick question about lowering Nitrates

Extra tanks - no place to setup :(

I am struggling with high Nitrates on one of my tanks right now and was wondering if I introduced some plants to the tank if that would help????

I picked up a free tank that came with fish that had not been properly maintained and now I am fighting with OTS (Old Tank Syndrom). If I bring the Nitrate levels down too quickly it will kill the fish. Doing 25% WC every second day and have the readings down to between 40-80 PPM now... that is down by half at least - the inital readings were off the charts.

I am assuming that the plants would just continually draw from the nitrates and as long as I don't add too many it shouldn't change the levels drastically... would it?

I was thinking of a couple of small bamboo plants - base in the water and leaves out the top of the tank. They are in a barebottom tank right now - just trying to keep up with the waste level so there is really nothing to secure a plant to the bottom - and I have no idea of the fish will eat the plants anyway: 2 goldfish, 1 pleco, 1 black shark, 1 angel, 1 golden loach, 2 tetras (of some sort).

If anyone has a better plant to use - please let me know and I will see if I can find it. I have to get these fish healthy so that I can get rid of them.... Anyone want free fish?

Try Elodea densa and duckweeds but your goldfish will only consume both plants and even if you remove the goldies, the duckweeds will overrun your tank quickly and clogging filters and blocking light.

Just got back from my LFS. Not much selection in plants I am afraid.

I ended up with 2 large 'water lettuce' (I think that what they are called).
Lots of roots and lots of leaves - and it floats so I don't have to try to hold it down to the bottom. Hopefully they will be nutrient hogs too.

I don't really care if the fish eat it as long as it is around long enough to help bring the Nitrates down, but I may have to look for some hornwort for the 65 Hex I want to setup.

Thanks for the advice.

Hey JM1212 - I have been doing about 25% every second day with a vac and it is coming down but slowly. I am just afraid of too big a swing in the levels.

It is amazing how much work, worry, and money we will spend of fish we don't even want. As soon as these guys are healthy I plan on giving them away :)

you should increase the water changes to daily 25%. if the nitrates have already come down by at least half, they're getting used to the new water. it's fine to step it up a little now.
