Just a quick question for market research: Does your LFS determine the sex of fish properly? As in, do they have a tank of male guppies that are certainly males? Likewise for other livebearers...
the workers at my Petsmart have never had any trouble finding me a male or female molly, swordtail, or platy. they keep their guppies seperated though.
Ya, I was gunna say at Petsmart and Petco, most males/females guppies are seperated. Others are labeled "males only" for the other types of male guppies. Every other fish you have to notice yourself :S.
Angels are very difficult to sex at any age. As far as livebearers go, Yes they do a fairly good job of sexing but then again livebearers are fairly easy compared to other fish. When it comes to some of the ones that aren't real obvious, they work with me to try to get the mix I am looking for. When either of us is in doubt, they drag "the book" out. I do not use either of our big box stores and I stay with the 2 Mom & Pop's as neither have ever steered me wrong.
With my lfs, it's a matter of knowing who to ask. Some of the employees really know their stuff. At least the ones that don't are willing to say so and get help from the appropriate people.
It depends on where I go.The Petcos and Petsmarts seem to try,but there are always male and females mixed.I bought a beautiful male guppy once out of a Petsmart female tank, and got him for about $2 cheaper than the other males. One locally owned store where I live is very good at sperating their male and female live bearers, while the only other good locally owned store does not care, and mixes them on purpose. The employes at this store all know the difference between the males and females.
