This is a great site. Glad I stumbled on to it. I have a 110 gal tank and change 25% of the water each week. Tap water ph is off the charts. If I let the water sit for a few days it comes down to 7.6 or so. Other tap water readings are ok. I always treat new water with Prime. I have a community tank with the usual suspects. Tetras, rainbows, pleco, angels, platys, corys,and r-t shark. Am considering an r/o unit to help with water quality. Any thoughts, opinions, or commets on r/o units would be apreciated. Thanks

R/O water can be a good idea but you have to watch out for Ph swings in your water because the KH of R/O water is very low. If your fish are doing fine with your tap water it might not be worth the expense.

I always worked with South American cichlids and bred a lot of them. Only when I had difficulty breeding the more difficult species did I purchase an RO unit. It's not really necessary to keep your fish happy. As Chuck says, you are a lot better off just with what you are doing now.

R/O wastes a lot of water (90% I think) too.

I'd really like to know your off the chart PH reading.

Is it too low or too high?
What's the max/min reading in your Ph test?

r/o unit

Too high. I have the AP master test kit. The high range ph card goes to 8.8 and is purple in color. My tap water is darker shade of purple when I test it. Thanks for your replies. I guess I'll save the money and buy more fish and equipment.

If it goes over 9, it's too alkaline even for saltwater fish.

If things have been going fine until now, keep it up.
