My Radican sword is doing very well overall. He now has 2 shoots that have a series of flowers on them and at the flowers many are now growing leaves. When and how do I propagate this guy and how do I care for the plantlets?
If I understand you correctly, you have a sword plant that has shoots coming off of it with daughter plants. If that is the situation, I usually just let the daughter plants stay attached to the shoot from the parent plant until I seee that there is a sufficient root system on the daughter plants. Then I just snip the shoot from the parent plant and replant them so they can grow on thier own.
The shoots are out of the water. Most of the Radican is out of water level and all the flowers are above water, as are the daughter plants. So They probably won't be developing any root system. So what do I do?
It sounds like the new pants are growing emersed instead of submerged. I am not sure but I think that eventually the new plants will grow some roots that will hang down in the water. When this happens if you want to grow the new plants submerged you can probably plant them but if I am not mistaken all or most of the submerged leaves will die off and new ones will grow in thier place. Or you can continue to grow the plants emersed as they are now. If you do not want the new plants maybe you can sell them or trade them for plants that you do want.
I like this plant and would enjoy more, I just do not know how to properly propagate it. It was in a tank, but when I was re-doing the tank the silicone seal was compromised and I didn't want to risk a leak, so the plant is now in a plastic jug so only the roots and a few inches of stem are above below water, the rest is way out in the air. This is how it was growing and flowering when it was in tank though.
I don't think it will fit. The tank it was in was an open-topped 40breeder, but I won't use that tank again because I don't trust the silicone seal in one area on the bottom. None of my other tanks are planted or open-topped except for a 10 gallon. It would not even fit in the 40breeder again because it has 2 stalks that are growing in opposite directions and are now spanning about 4 feet. When it was in the 40breeder the stalks started to grow out of the water. There is no way to cut them now and have them survive? I know some plants start off in moist topsoil. I could do that if it was appropriate for this species.
