I've got a 55g with 6 black phantom tetras and 2 breeding pair of platies. I added 2 juvie geophagus pindares (unsexed) last week, and they're all doing great. I will probably add a few plecos and cories this weekend. (Tank is heavily planted, with at least 3 rock caves and a huge piece of driftwood that spans most of the tank, and which creates its own little nook and crannies for fish to hide in.)

My question: I want to add another calm(ish) species of cichlid to the tank, and have been eyeing a breeding pair of rainbow cichlids. I am finding disagreement from various online sources as to whether mixing these two different cichlids is a good idea.

From what I've read, the rainbows and pindares are both on the low end of the (cichlid) aggression scale, so I'm thinking they might be okay together in the 55g setup described above.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

You may get lucky, or there may be problems if/when a pair of either cichlid species forms and spawns. Try it, but be prepared to move some fish to another tank if necessary.

I agree with Todd. Btw you should up the amount of pindare cuz geos are more intersting in groups of 4+

probably would be too many fish. I've had more of a social interaction with more geos thats why I like keeping at least 4-5+
