Rainbow still sick?

Ok, I've set up a 10g QT and added the two sickly bows. (see pic below). It looks pretty ugly, but has some improvements from my last, based on the comments received:

  • Some silk plants for cover
  • A coco-hut and driftwood piece
  • Background along back and sides

Tomorrow I'll look at getting some Maracyn. Thanks for the help, all!

How are things going? I hope they are improving. Update us, please.

Yes, thanks for the interest and support! After my last update:

Yesterday:
-- Moved my wounded dwarf gourami into the 10g HT with the 2 bows (might as well med all together at once)
-- Tested and it looked like I had some ammonia present so did a 50% wc
-- Dosed Maracyn and Furan-2 (store didn't have Maracyn-2 and it looks like Maracyn and Furan-2 are ok together...yes?)

Today:
-- Will retest params
-- Will do WC if needed
-- Will do another dose of M & F-2
-- DG and Bows *possibly* look better, but staying conservative with my assessment

I just tested again and NH3 was solidly .25. I'm pretty sure the tank should be ok though. Is it possible that the Maracyn and Furan-2 are giving a false positive for ammonia?

Did a 60% WC. Then did another dose of Maracyn (dose #5) and Furan-2 (dose #4).

Small rainbow's eye is looking really good! (didn't actually look that bad before though)
Big bow's eye doesn't look cloudy anymore, but has a weird "sunken-in" look -- like part of it has collapsed.

Will probably continue dosing for a while more and hope for more healing progress.

It sounds like they are improving, but I would do as big a water change as necessary and as often as necessary to keep the ammonia at 0. Big water changes right before dosing won't interfere with the action of the antibiotics, and pristine water is an absolute must to help them get over this.

It seems that my meds did a number on my beneficial bacteria. That + desire to have my sick dwarf gourami alone in hospital + no more cloudy rainbow eye made me decide to return the 2 bows to my 55g.

The small one looks ok -- eye seems good, but color is still off. The large DG's eye isn't puffy and cloudy any more, but now looks sunken in and kind of obliterated actually :( I'm thinking though, maybe that means the bacterial infection is gone and now it's just a wound that needs to heal.

So, plan for these guys is to monitor and keep my water conditions as good as possible. Current params are NH3=0, NO2=0, NO3=15. I plan to do a 50% WC tomorrow.

I did the 50% WC in the 55g...bows seem to be doing ok, but big bow's eye still looks bad. Here's the best pic I could get:

I think he must've had an eye infection, and now probably the infection is gone but the damage is done. Fortunately fish can live with one eye. Hard to say if it will get better or not.
