I have a newly setup, soon to be planted aquarium with CO2 injection. I plan on adding a few schools of rainbowfish after I get the water chemestry and plants stable.

I tested the pH at the bottom of the water column and it read 6.0. At the top it was 6.5. How low of pH will rainbowfish be able to tolerate? What sources on the subject are available?

I keep my bows at a pH around 6.6.
Rainbowfish can tolerate a fairly wide pH range, but they don't cope well with sudden pH swings (just like other fish). A pH as low as 6 can drop further because it is likely that the water has no buffering capacity. I found because my water was very soft (1DKH) the pH dropped from 6.6 to 6 throught the course of the week. I now have a few small pieces of dead coral in my tank and they keep the KH at 3DKH and pH right on 6.6.

As long as the pH is stable they will be fine.
This is a great site all about keeping bows.
