I bought 3 rainbowfish. 2 looks the same, and one looks rather different. Sadly I bought them without even knowing the type of rainbowfish. They had the tank labelled rainbowfish.

This must be either Australian rainbow or the Axelrodi (Lake Tebera) Rainbow, or reg yellow rainbow?

This one is the one I want to know.

Any thoughts or assumptions?

Is it nescessarily true that Australian rainbowfish gets rather large...? 5 to 6 inches? my gawd i best return them

The silvery one looks like a young male glossolepis incisus (salmon rainbow, red rainbow etc...), or it could be a female. I agree with catfish69hunter. The top pics look like turquoise rainbows, Melanotaenia lacustris. Try to get some more if you have the space. They do best in mixed sex groups. You can expect these guys to color up beatifully. If you've never seen a group of rainbows displaying to eachother in the morning sunlight, you are sorely missing out. Phooey to all those who say to keep tanks away from windows. Yes, both species won't have much of a problem hitting 5 inches.

I might as well take the red rainbow out and the less colorful one and keep one turquoise..or should I? I thought they were in their max. I'm looking for 3 inch rainbows. Anyone know good 3 inch ones?

It is so nice to hear someone that has experienced this too!
I had a mating pair of boseman's rainbows and the spectacles they would put on in the morning sunlight was like no other!
I had to donate them to my lfs plant tank so they could stay together on display in a bigger tank than mine. Plus they chewed the tail fins off the blues you see on the left in my avatar/profile pic. They grew back just fine afterwards.
