I didn't see a disease forum, so I'll try it here.

I have a Boemani Rainbowfish that I've had since last July. He came from good stock, and did well up until around January when he developed a small sore in front of the front dorsal fin. This became white.. with fungus. I moved him to a 10g hospital tank... which happened to be being treated for Ich. The Ich medication (malachite green based) knocked the fungus right now. After the water was changed and carbon added, I left him in the tank for a couple weeks.. and added some salt.

He got worse... I moved him to a 50g.. because the hospital had a higher PH and Hardness.. and thought that might have come into play.
I treated with Melafix.... then stopped. He developed this white fungus around his mouth. He's got scales peeling off the sides of his face.. some are just trailing off like a loose bit of skin.

But here is the kicker. He's acting normal. He's eating fine, and other than the obvious damage, is acting just like the other Rainbowfish in the tank. He's not skittish, he's an agressive eater... etc. His colors are actually very good..and no other fish are sick in the tank.

The tank readings are ph 6.8, ammonia/nitrites are zero. Nitrates are about 10ppm. Temps are about 78f. It is a well planted tank. I do a 20% water chance once per week.. I vacuum once/week and trim/remove dead plants, etc. The tank is 36x18x18(50 gallon)... There is a Turquoise Rainbow, another Boesmani(smaller) and 3 Milleneum rainbows, 2 Yo Yo Loaches and a german blue ram.

The closest thing I can find is Cottonmouth.. he's got the saddle on the sides.. the damage that's falling off.. etc. But after a steady week of Melafix.. there has been NO progress.

My hospital is being used for Fry right now... my options are to setup ANOTHER tank.. euthenize him(which I'd hate to do.. but I don't want my other fish to get sick), find someone to take him.. or take my chances. He was purchased from RAREFISHLAX from Aquabid, who is reputed to sell some of the best stock.

I can supply a photo later if needed.

Ideas?

I'd like to see the picture.

If it is cotton mouth (flex) you will probably need to treat with a real antibiotic like Kanamycin or Maracyn and Maracyn 2. Do you have any meds on hand?

I have had a lot of success with Malachite Green based products in treating fungus and cottonmouth in my bows. They've always responded well, with no losses and no side-effects.

When one of my bows got what appeared to be cottonmouth I dabbed some malachite green (in the diluted form) directly onto the area with a cotton bud. This meant I didn't have to medicate the whole tank, the fish recovered completely.

He was treated with malachite green in the 10g hospital. But I THINK the high PH and Hardness of this tank may have made recovery difficult. Still, Rainbows should be fine in medium hard water with a 7.6 PH.

There are no other fish in this tank that show any signs, but that's why I'm worried. I have too many nice fish and time invested in these fish, which is why I'd rather euthenize him than lose all my fish!

The only meds that I have on hand are metronidazole, quick cure and melafix.

When I've treated him with the quick cure in the past, the fungus went away, but he never healed.

I'll submit a photo tonight.

Be sure to treat for the entire regiment required in the medication instructions. Also, if he got this, the whole tank really should be treated as well. NOt sure, but you may have treated the individual, but he was in a weakended state - he was placed back into the tank - and may have been reinfected. He probably isn't strong enough to combat the fungus.

Fungus usually needs to have a soar or a weakend (stressed) fish to take hold (not always).

In January when he contracted the fungus what did you add to the tank?

Here's a nice resource w/ images; http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html#Bodyfungus

OK.. he didn' get the illness from this tank. In all fairness, he got it in tank A. I moved him to a hospital (tank b) which treated him with meds and malachite green. He got worse so I moved him to tank C.

He had the problem for about 3 weeks in tank A, 3 weeks in tank be, and probably 4 weeks in tank c. No other fish in tank A showed any signs of illness.. nor tank b, or tank c.

It's been at least 10 week since it first popped up and no signs in tank A.. still healthy. But I agree, once he's gone, I'll probably treat the entire tank to be safe.

Fish is here: (his tail is more orange than the photo.. notice the area behind the eye where scales have fallen off.

It's hard to tell from that picture. Does it look stringy?

I haven't had much luck with Melafix, either. Probably needs an antibiotic. You could try something like Jungle Fungus clear. That has an antibiotic in it.

one of my rainbows had the same white mustache, no other signs, no other fish affected...I treated with pimafix and melafix together , and it cleared up within a week...
