Just noticed one of my male Turquoise Rainbows acting like my male Golden Wonder Killifish with my female Killifish. Basicly doing the same wiggle dance the male Killifish does and trying to push her into the spawning mop. His nose turned that brilliant yellow color while he was doing it, too.

I know Rainbowfish and Killifish are often kept together and it got me wondering if this is some kind of learned behavior.

Sounds like spawning behaviour to me. My male rainbows do a lot of fin flashing, curving and swimming around the female and brilliant colour changes. I call it a dance too. It's a natural behaviour from the wild and I think it's the same breeding behaviour for all fish in the Rainbowfish family.

Most likely the female will get fat with eggs and she'll deposit a few eggs each morning (for a few days) on the mop, they don't spawn all at once. If your quick (they'll eat the eggs) you might be able to raise a few. Good luck.

did you see the part where he said his male bow was courting his male golden wonder killie? maybe they're trying to be *AHEM* life partners. :D

Are Killifish and Rainbowfish from the same family? I had no idea.. just thought it was odd that the rainbow was flirting with the killifish. lol

Edit: Actually the male rainbow is flirting with the female killifish. The male killifish was not involved and was on the other side of the tank.

they are not even remotely related. he was just flirting with your killie. I guess he is "different" if you know what I mean. ;):D

Woops misread that part, thought it said male rainbow was courting female rainbow. I know different species of rainbows will interbreed and the breeding behavour etc are similar between killies and bows, but I'm pretty sure they're not at all related.

One of my male rainbows sometimes tries to court my female gourami but I think the message gets lost in translation LOL.

My Male Guppy is trying to spawn with both my male and female Celeb Rainbows. I'd like to see how this works out lol.
