You might be able to fit 3-4 dwarf neons in a 10G but they prefer larger groups of about 6.

I wondered about the dwarf neon rainbows. They are really pretty but I wasn't sure how much company they like to keep.

BTW...do you just love your tourquoise rainbowfish in your sig?? I have one and he is simply gorgeous. Esp. when he is feeling rowdy and gets all colored up! He argues with one of my boesmanni males all the time and geesh their colors are pretty when they are angry! LOL I ordered more of the tourqouise from my LFS..cant wait to add them to the tank

Neon "dwarf" rainbows are not dwarfs. They grow up to 3". I don't know who the person is that started calling them dwarfs, but they need a kick in the head. Their real common name is just "Neon Rainbow", not Dwarf.

So, you guys are talking about 3" fish, not 2" fish.

I have a trio (2 males and a female) in my 55 of Signifer Rainbow fish. They are awesome little fish. The males put on quite a display show all the time. They stay very small less than 2 inches max and are great 2 watch. A trio would do well in a planted 10 gallon tank.

Blame Dr.Gerald R. Allen, who wrote the book
Rainbowfishes in Nature and in the Aquarium, on p139ff. I think that they were already being called 'Dwarf', but he formalized it. They are called such because they are among the smallest of the true Rainbowfishes, not because they are tiny fish, and as such the name is fully valid.

Do remember that dwarf Cichlids and be up to 6", and dwarf suckermouth cats can exceed that. 'Dwarf' is used as a comparative term, not an absloute.

I have kept DNRs in a 30" tank, but they look and do better for me in a 3 or 4' tank. I breed them only in 4' tanks.

It's a tie between my rainbow and my paradise gouramis. I know rainbowfish are schooling fish but my tourquoise seems happy enough and swims with the paradise most of the time. He/she is a beautiful aqua blue and I love to watch it swim.

i love rainbows ^^ so pretty.

i'm going to go into my lfs and get some more plants today and check out what they can get in blue eyes wise. i was going to have neon rainbows before but i think it will be too cramp (roan art kindly made me a to scale pic and it looked squishy with even 4).

i'm thinking the Popondetta Blue-eye if i can get him... if not i'll see what they can get. beautiful beautiful fish.

ps. thanks everyone ^^

Ah, man, Allen named them? Wonder how come it just says "Neon Rainbow" on the Rainbowfish Home site.

Unfortunately people buying them don't realize it's just a comparative term.

That's what I say too, but Gary Lange says a 10 gallon is fine if it's heavily planted and no one is disputing it thus far (on the rainbow list). Not to argue with him -- experienced as he is with rainbows -- but personally I don't think any fish that can grow to 3" belongs in a 10g tank. I agree with your 3 or 4' assessment.

I just don't have the experience and knowledge to argue something like that with people who have been doing this for years and years and have actually gone to Irian Jaya and collected the darn fish.

I'm rather at a loss as to how to deal with this.
