RAOK discussion thread

I know this is supposed to be aquarium related items only - but what if those who just don't have any fish type things could offer up a choice of maybe 3 NON fish things and see if anyone bites. It would have to be stated that whoever takes that offer gets it back to fish stuff. In other words: person 1 puts up fish stuff, person 2 has no fish stuff to offer up and offers something NICE but not fish related, person 3 likes that offer and wants it, but has to put something fish related back up. That way it doesn't just become a "stuff trading" thread.

What do you guys think - could this help those who need fish things but don't have anything much to return to others?

Idk worth a try..

Ever since i found out about the raok, ive been saving plant clippings and other equipment i might not need to maybe one day put it up when something good comes along..

Perhaps this forums members dont have much available on the side since either 1-most are just starting out 2-most just dont keep what they dont need..

Can multiple offers be posted? It seems to me that if the last offer isn't snagged, it pretty much dies out. I have plenty to offer and love the idea of it, but to accept something I'd have to in turn get rid of would be silly. Thoughts?

I can't believe no one needs the latest offer, its been there forever it seems. A nice little starter package.

I know its not supposed to be a thread to get what you can and give up as little as possible but as stated earlier most here are just starting out. I don't think there should be a limit. The ROAK at TPT has gotten so large that its out of my ballpark. I'd never be able to match those offers.

I'm letting some plants grow larger then I really want to while waiting for something I don't already have to show up, I don't really know what that might be but I will when I see it.

One of the other members and I have been batting this around in PM's for a while and think that if someone doesn't have anything to offer - they need to cruise over to the "FREE PLANTS" thread here on this forum. Then they can 1) use those plants for their contribution, or 2) grow them out in their own tanks instead of going for the RAOK's. Either way, they get to improve their plant collections and get their tanks going nicely. Hope this helps someone who wants plants and has nothing really to offer back up.

I think that will just get a bit confusing..

Though what can be done (and is done on PT RAOK) is people either try and sweeten their current offer (not saying splokes offer isnt already sweet, because it is) or another person who has random things laying around adds on to the current offer (dont know how that will happen here if it already seems like no one has anything to offer)

I haven't taken the offer because we need more people involved in this. Like I said, most of us need to gear up to this on this board.

If it keeps limping along for a couple more months it will start to accelerate. Keep in mind that the most ummmm devout shall we say are member of several boards and most likely participate in the RAOK thread that best suits their purposes.

I think we make equipment the specialty of this thread, bring your heaters, filters, breeding nets and cones, small acrylic tanks, air line equipment and pumps, powerheads, CO2 diffusers etc, books that you know by heart, power strips and timers, light strips and extra light bulbs, (most of us with planted tanks are hanging on to CFL 50/50's that we don't need, I know I am) and wait to put it here.

Tell everyone what its used for and why they need it, polish those sales skills and don't worry so much about how much you'll give, think instead of the tangled mess in your closets and stands you are cleaning up.

Or maybe I'm projecting.

See now when you start getting into equipment you are really leaving the newer fish keepers in the dust. The idea is to keep it as available to everyone as possible.

I'd like to see it stay plants, driftwood, decorations.

Maybe a 2nd one can be started for equipment.

i don't think there is any need to start a second when the first is barely limping along. I haven't participated because I am almost always low on equipment, decoration, etc and the only plants I have to offer are ones commonly found. I would offer livestock, but only when I see something I need (heaters, timers, etc). It would be nice if this took off, but it was a bit overzealous in the beginning, which may have intimidated people from offering things up. There was criticism that people need to offer GOOD stuff, not just what they have to offer. I think that on a forum with a lot of new members, and people starting new tanks, no offer should be discouraged as long as it has appropriate "value". The more grandiose you require the offer to be, the more the members able to participate are whittled down. Just my two cents, hope it picks back up and I would love to participate at some point.
