right now i have 10 harlequin rasboras and 8 julii corries in my tank. the rasboras dont really seem to school all that much. i am going to be adding 2 german rams. do you think this will cause the rasboras to school more?
They will never school so tightly with placid fish like rams. What size is your tank? It's not a big deal they will not school. Try rummy-nose tetras though for tight schoolers.
I have both Harlequin rasboras and rummy nose tetras and they school real nice. But I have 2 Pearl Gouramis (which may look threatening) and 5 adult Neon Dwarf rainbows, so probably that bigger fish theory is true. I also know that my rummy nose are very shy and are always together, while my rasboras may split from time to time (probably they're not that shy). So if you have them alone in the tank they have nothing to fear, so they won't school.
They don't school because there is no threat to them. When fish school, it's because they feel threatened but they will school to feel safer. They aren't stressed out, it's just a precautionary act. My Neon Tetras only school if my Dwarf Gourami is out in the clear area of my tank, or if it is feeding time.
I agree with what has been mentioned. My rasboras school nice and tightly at 10 in the school. They often will let a cherry barb or two in with them.. however, they are in a 75 gallon with spawning Angels... so I would gather you need to up the gallons and the bigger threats. If you are already up in gallons, then you are halfway there
I have 9 Hengeli rasboras in a 10 gallon planted tank and they shoal together quite a bit without a threatening fish. I'm quite pleased with their show in the tank.
I also have six corydoras hastatus in the tank that will occasionally shoal with them as well. When I first added them to the tank, they totally shoaled with the rasboras for about 24 hours. It was interesting to watch.
