real vs fake plants

Live plants seems to be the consensus. Again, I will caution that you should have your aquarium stable and preferably mature before you add plants. If you don't have the fish thing figured out, the plants will only complicate things further. For example, if your tank is not finished cycling, plants will remove nitrogenous compounds. This results in your biological filter not developing correctly, leading to possible problems later on.

How big is your tank, how long has it been set up, what kind of fish do you have? Many fish will also eat or root up plants, so it's harder to keep plants with them.
