Really small filters for small tanks

Hi Everyone!

Unfortunately this has been a very sad week for me, I've lost one male betta and two females...

The only thing I can put this down to is some fungus that's developing in their tanks (I think this is because there is not enough water movement?) and so I am on the hunt for filters to suit a tank 30cm long, 9cm high.

Can anyone suggest any to me...?

I've had to rescue yet another betta from a decent size tank (due to this fungus issue) and now he's in a small one and I feel really bad seeing him travel a couple of cm and stop then turn back travel another couple cm and so forth...Fortunately though I think I got to him in time to prevent him from getting sick! :help:

Thanks heaps!

The tank is really only 9 cm (~3.5 in) high?!

How deep (front to back) is it?

There are some small internal filters like this Mini Duetto or you can use an air-driven sponge filter like this one.

But we can help you better if we have all of the tank dimensions.

Yep, that's it. I just don't know enough about filters etc to know what I need...

I know these tanks need something cause they are too big not to have filtration...(even if I have learnt by trial and error).

Thanks so much for your help...This is best place to come to get some decent answers ;)

I keep a male betta in a 2.5 gallon and he seems to be doing fine without a filter. How often do you change water? I do it every other day. Bettas can't tolerate a lot of water movement, it'll stress them out and die prematurely.

Im in Sydney Australia and we are on water restrictions so I can only do water changes once a week.

The other problem is I study a night and don't have the time to change water every second day even if it were feasable.

This is why I think I need to get a filtration system to help keep the tank environment healthy..

I know that strong currents stresses the bettas but I'd rather have a small current than a dead betta.

Would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me on finding something suitable.

you may want to consider a under ground filter. There are also some small filters for 3 gal tanks, but I do not know what will be available to Australia. You may want to look at big al's online store (they are in Canada) and they may ship your way.

Mini Whisper would work in a 2.5. The other suggestions of sponge filter etc are better, but it's another option. It has an adjustable flow, hangs off the back, and the only thing I didn't like is that for a very small tank, it might be a little too vigorous. I had mine in a divided 5 g (twice what you have) and one fish got the current. IT didn't necessarily mind and I kept it with hiding plants and stuff, but I felt guilty.
