Have to say this again I really like this LFS always have gotten pretty good fish there and a few days ago was really impressed because I felt like this employee had my back. I was looking for a pearl gouramie female looked in this particular tank for the fish. The employee who was helping me choose one pointed out to me said to me this tank might not be the best for what you are looking for see this fish it is infested with ich....I was like Wowwwwwwww how cool is that I was so impressed he told me. I hadn't noticed it but man did that fish have the disease it was another not the gouramie I was going to buy. The fact he told me about it before I decided to buy it. Now that is what I call a LFS employee who cares about his customers. Kudos to Petland Discounts SI, NY Hylan Blvd Plaza Mall store for having an employee who cares!:woot:

That's nice!

I always mention ich in tanks, it's one of the first things I look for since sadly there is almost always a little here and there in the couple of stores I frequent. (The only two close ones.) Sometimes it's only a spot or two, and I really appreciate it when they actually take the time to look and say, "Oh thanks for telling me" instead of saying "Yeah, ok" or "We know..." in an annoyed tone.

Same goes for dead fish. Most of the time they don't have too many, but I still try to point it out if it doesn't seem like it will be too obnoxious. You can tell a lot by their reaction, and thankfully most of the time it isn't bad.

I know many times they can't really help it, especially at one of the stores, where there are maybe 5 people (besides the groomers) working at a time during weekdays...just not enough warm bodies to get things done :(

the petlanddiscounts near me has ichy tanks too,
so I only buy their specimens thur/fri/sat soon after
they arrive from their weekly wholesale truck delivery.

I got 6 ottos for $8 and all their tails were rotted,
but thankfully a Month in my tanks they grew back.

all their tanks are old floss carbon bubble boxes,
in shallow coated gravel they vacuum weekly.
I doubt they even filter the tap water they refill,
since I see them using a standard garden hose.

the manager was cool enough to price match the
recent $1/gal Petco sale, so I got a 40gal breeder.
I sometimes buy stuff for my two cats there too.

they even offered to deliver it if I could not,
so their employees do care, they just don't
have much to work with.

so it's nice having that chain nearby, but it's sad
after all these years they have not evolved at all.
even the cat food is all high carb over hyped junk.

Well since I have been lucky and never experienced my fish getting ich it was a good lesson to learn seeing a fish with the actual disease and was nice that the employee actually warned me before I bought the fish. I usually look at the tanks and stay away from any that have dead fish in them or the fish just don't look right. I too go the day after their delivery. Is nice to know I can rely on them some of the mom and pop stores I just have not been impressed with.

That is really nice of the employee! But... I'm not convinced I'd buy fish there. Ich is highly contagious, so all fish sharing the same tank (or water!) as the infected fish are at risk. Personally, unless it was a fish I just absolutely had to have, I'd probably pass.

At the very least, I'd quarantine any new fish before adding it to a tank, just to be safe.
