Here's the scoop; The tank is a 100 gallon, currently filtered by an Aqua clear 300, and a Fluval 400. 0 Ammonia, )0 Nitirites, ~40 ppm Nitrates. 20% water change once a week. ph ~6.8, Temp currently 76.5.

About 10 days ago, had to get rid of two 10 inch Tiger Oscars that I suspect were starting to be a breeding pair. They were fighting almost non stop with 1 4 inch Firemouth Cichlid. Only other tank occupants were 3 Tiger Barbs, and an SAE.

After trading in the Oscars to a good LFS, I picked up 12 Tiger Barbs just because I wanted to keep the biological filtration at the same level. So far, all is fine. No problems between the Firemouth and (now) 15 Tiger Barbs. One of the Tiger Barbs has suddenly become Rudolph the Red nose :)

Anyways, I'm wondering if it is safe/advisable to add in a few (how many) Ruby Barbs.

Tom

(by the way, The Oscars were named Vespasian and Trajan and somewhat hand trained....every now and then they would enjoy a piece of cooked meat, cheese or earthworm)

Just make sure that the Rosies aren't of a size for some FM eating, and get a big school, and you should have an absolutely amazing tank, replete with dithers so that your FM will be more visible!!!

AFter removing the Oscars, and putting in the Tiger Barbs

The Firemouth is already more active.

Re; The Rosy Barbs; I didn't think that they would be capable of standing up to the Tiger barbs and Firemouth, which is why I was going with the Ruby's (or is that a bad idea?).

When the Oscrs were in the Tank, the Firemouth stayed hidden nin a cave most of the time. Now, he comes otu intoi the open more often, and every now and then will swim with the Tiger Barbs.

thanks for your help.

Tom, I'm sorry...I've got Rosies on the mind...my roomie's spawned again the other day. I will make that Rubies and we'll all be happier!

Glad to hear that the FM is out and about...I was wondering if the Tigers would make good dithers or not--looks like I have got my answer.

did you regret getting rid of your oscars? i cant afford a bigger tank for mine. hes about 9 inches, and i would like to get some smaller fish to put in my tank, but dont know how well my oscar will do without me. i think i will just have to ask around the lfs and see if anyone has a tank that will accept my oscar

I regret it very much

I really did think of them as pets. But, I did not enjoy having to duct tape the lid down, and cleaning up spilt water when I came home from work.

If I do buy Oscars again, I'll make sure they go in the tank first, and *very* carefully add tankmates.

I do hope they get a good home though.
