i have a 20gallon long tank, with mostly plastic plants, although i do have a small, lousy looking clump of christmas tree moss. there's a large rock in the middle of the tank, and on the rock, a film of brown algae has formed. here and there on the brown film, there's a red algae, well, more of a maroon. It's about 1/4" long from base to tip. the color is attractive, and it looks kind of nice, swaying in the current. the brown film isn't too attractive, but the red stuff is. Is it harmful to the fish (mostly various tetras)? I imagine it's not too good for the xmas tree moss, because it probably uses up nutrients.

I've read that Siamese algae eaters will eat that stuff. If it's something that needs to be removed from the tank, that would probably be the path i'd take. I used to have a Chinese algae eater, but it was far too aggressive. i returned it to my LFS.

Will ghost/glass shrimp eat it?

I had some of that reddish algae once, before I changed to a planted tank. It didnt look too bad, so I just left it there, and my fish were fine. Mostly they just ignored it, but once in a while somebody would take a nibble and go their merry way. I wouldnt worry about it.
