Hiya,
I'm curious about what causes the nuchal hump of red devils (or other cichlids with a nuchal hump) to increase and decrease in size. We've recently had a sudden introduction to summer and the tank went up a close to a degree (celcius) while I was at work. The fan has been on since to cool down, but I noticed that the devils hump increased in size noticeably as well as him becoming more aggressive.

Basically I'm curious whether there's a relationship between nuchal hump size and mood and whether it's temperature related at all. Thoughts?

dude its all genenitic of the fish you cant do anything to get your fish to grow a hump either it will have one or not sorry to burst you bubble. i have a 7 inch red devil and he doesnt have a hump but it looks like be might be growing one. either way this is my fav. cichlid

I am pretty sure it does have to do with dominance, but maybe someone else who knows for sure can chime in. :)

Humps can change considerably in size due to a few factors, 1# strees levels can play a part in the hump size. 2# enviroment 3# When the same or similar speices are housed together or in a tank side by side in plain veiw of each fish's line of sight, as kayla said "dominace" will make a hump change in size. The final size of hump when the fish is at its best will have to do with genetics, but as stated before can change with enviroment.
