Red eye and GSP

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, but have been keeping 2 Red eye puffers for about 4 months now in a 33 gallon with an SG of about 1.008. Today I went to the pet store and the had some GSP there, (which were my fish of choice to begin with, but i was told they didn't know when they were getting any in so I settled for my 2 little red eyes.) I had to get one! There are also 2 balloon mollies in there.

Will my GSP be okay with these guys? I'm assuming my mollies will likely become a meal & plan to move them to my 20 gal tropical community tank before that happens.

I have a heavily decorated tank, lots of rocks & fake plants & a piece of driftwood to provide lots of nooks and crannies. I'm mostly wondering if my puffers will live in harmony.
 
well, my issue may be answered for me as I have searched out my lil red eyes and i have these guys :Carinotetraodon salivator

Which are apparantly fresh water, so now i have to either find a new home for them or return them to the store or get myself a new 20gal for the little guys, sigh. I love local pet stores, but I should have known since when i went in today they had what appeared to be some clown loaches and a cichlid of some sort in with their brackish fish.

I dont suppose these guys could live in low end brackish until i am able to get them a new tank? they seem to be fine now, eating, growing and so forth. So frustrating when you think a person is knowledgeable and really just full of so much fluff.
 
Well it looks like you answered your own question, the redeye puffers are indeed freshwater and won't live a long happy life in brackish. How long will it take you to get a new tank for them?

Also, GSPs require 30 gallons each so if you want one you'll only have one in your 33 gallon. They also move to highend brackish/marine as they get older.
 
I have no issues going high end brackish, I've been dabbling in it for about 6 or 7 months now and only kept it low because i had mollies and the red eyes.

I should be able to get a tank tomorrow, but be about a week or so before i can move them as I have to cycle. I could put them into my tropical community, but i think my tetras, gourami, and rainbow would suffer too much fin loss and stress due to the lil nippers as my mollies have.

on a lighter note, I dug up some worms in my backyard and the GSP LOVED them. gobbled a big juicy one right up & now he/she gone off to sleep off a full belly somewhere in my rocks.

Not sure where to put the new tank though, looks like it's gonna have to be in my daughters room somewhere....fishtanks are taking over my home.

Do you think it would be beneficial to take the sponge from my current FW tank to help cycle the new one?
 
You could pretty much instantly cycle the new tank by using the the filter media and taking some of the gravel from you FW tank. If its not the same gravel you could put it in some pantyhose and kind of bury it into the gravel.

Puffers really like worms, I've never fed Milton any worms though because we have a lot of neighbors that might be using pesticides and stuff.
 
Got my new tank for the red-eyes. Had to go with a 10gal for now as I didnt have the funds for a larger one. Should be able to move the little guys into their new home in 2-3 days as I used the filter media and water from my FW community to start it up.

All I need to get now is a heater as the Kit I bought neglected to include one.

Got some shrimp today for my GSP and he loved it. I'm a little surprised as he was eating only flake food at the LFS. My mollies and the red eyes seemed to enjoy it as well. Gave what was left to my tetras, they had a field day.

Red eyes are now in their new home as of about 20 minutes ago, one of them doesn't seem to be dong all that well though.
