Red eye and GSP

i took them out of the water & moved them into a bucket of water (just enough for them to be able to swim a bit) from their current tank which was sitting right beside the tank. Then I took a length of tubing and put it into the bucket and drip acclimated them over abot a 2 hour period, the bucket was about half full at this point, then I put the water from the bucket & the fish into their new tank by pouring it in slowly. The fish in questionwas acting odd this morning anyways, wouldn't eat and was hanging out at the top of the tank.

When I got him into the new tank he went right to the bottom, his belly is concave and his eyes are cloudy. he didn't swim at all, now he's back at the top of the tank again, but still won't touch any food and his eyes are still cloudy. I'm hoping that since he's swimming about a bit now that he's on the road to recovery.

I'm assuming that being in brackish water was starting to take a toll on him and then the stress of the move made it a bit worse.

I'm keeping a close eye and have suspended a shrimp from the top of the tank so they can eat if they get hungry. I also added a little bit extra of aquaplus to the tank to try to reduce the stress.

I guess i'll just keep an eye on them over the next few days and keep offering food. Hopefully the situation will fix itself, unless you have any other suggestions.

Hopefully he is on his way to recovery in the fw tank.

The reason I asked about taking them out of the water was because puffers shouldn't be suspended in the air, you should catch them in a cup while still in the water. If they get out of the water they can puff up air which isn't good for them. Then you have to depuff them which isn't a fun process.

If he doesn't start looking better, you could try thepufferforum.com they are good with sick puffers and have good advice and what not. I try to help the best I can but I don't know too much about different sicknesses

You could also try soaking whatever food you feed in some garlic, that increases appetite and you might want to get some vitamins (I know doctors foster and smith has vitamins) that you can soak their food in, it would probably help them get back to healthy after being in bw.

They didn't puff at all, so I don't think that's an issue, but will remember that for future reference. I do have some fresh garlic here so i'll press some and soak my shrimp with it when I thaw them tomorrow. I'll definitely see what those vitamins are all about as well.

Thank you so much for all of your advice, I really appreciate it. You have likely helped in saving my fish's lives.

Oh, I have gotten a second GSP, they are small now so should be okay in the 33, but I will be upgrading to a 55 within the year and will be moving my red eyes to my 33. Then my 10 will become a shrimpery or possibly a QT tank/nursery depending on if i am able to breed my pair of red eyes.

But thank you again spock, I really do appreciate the advice :)

You're welcome! you should take some pictures of your puffers, I love pictures :D

I use my extra 10 gallon as a betta/pond snail tank for my two puffers. My GSP gets a snail every day or every other day and his teeth have stayed nicely "filed"

Got my new tank for the red-eyes. Had to go with a 10gal for now as I didnt have the funds for a larger one. Should be able to move the little guys into their new home in 2-3 days as I used the filter media and water from my FW community to start it up.

All I need to get now is a heater as the Kit I bought neglected to include one.

Got some shrimp today for my GSP and he loved it. I'm a little surprised as he was eating only flake food at the LFS. My mollies and the red eyes seemed to enjoy it as well. Gave what was left to my tetras, they had a field day.

Odd,mostly the other way around,I put some flakes in my puffers tank,he took one bite, spat it out,and looked at me as if i were retarded. :lipssealedsmilie:

Idont know if they actually ate the flaks...but that's what they were giving them. I've only fed freeze dried blood worms, shrimp pellets, earthworms and thawed out shell on raw shrimps.

Will the shells on the shrimp keep their beaks trimmed or are snails necessary? I can only find large apple snails in my area, I have a few ads out looking for snails & ghost shrimp, but no replies yet.

I do believe i'll be taking some pics tonight or tommorrow of my 3 tanks and i'll get them posted asap.
