red eye puffers and target puffers

MEAN, MEAN MEAN!!! Even to each other. I have a pair of red eyes (t. lorteti). I had a male with 3 females. The largest female killed off the other two, until there was only the pair. She even bit ME! My lfs had 5 Targets (t. leiurus). The picked each other off, one by one, untill the last one was so weak, it died too. I have heard of folks breeding targets, so maybe they're better off in pairs, too. You can't sex them though (red eye sexes look totally different from each other). Also, the lfs had them all in a 10gal. I think you'd probably need about a 40gal w/lots of hiding places, for more than 1. As cute as my red eyes are, I really have to look for them most of the time, they hide a lot.

Agree with everyone. I have a little Red eye in an Eclipse 6 by himself right now since the person that bought him from our store put in a 10G tank and it killed 4 Zebra Danios. Then I put him in the 6 gallon with a 2 inch P Soclofi Cichlid and Puffy killed it. Puffy lives by itself now. While there is a post about puffs I got a question for anyone. One of our rare local wholesalers got in a Gold Nugget Puffer (supposivly brackish), does anyone know what it is, what it is like, and how big it gets. Thanks.

I have not seen one I was just wondering if anyone heard of him. I am thinking about just getting one to see what it is. Sounds really interesting and said the puff was only about 3". I will hopefully be able to get him on Fri, and will describe him in a post on Fri night.

Which fish are you getting? Do you have an empty tank? I'm thinking you're talking about a target, since the red eye doesn't get larger than an inch.

I have one female vietnamese (red-eye) puffer in a 30 gal tank with one texas cichlid (female), 3 cherry barbs, one lonely black tetra, and gold nugget pleco. Though I have seen her snipp the crap out of some fins, she is pretty calm for the most part. I would like to take out the cichlid, and buy a male puffer to mate. Does anyone have experience breeding, or attempting to breed this fish??

Several folks at my forum have sucess getting theirs to spawn. Good idea to remove the cichlid, as it will grow way to large for that tank. I'd remove the other fish for their own sake, too.
