Question from a new user here. I have in a 90 gallon tank three large myleus rubripinnis, two of which have paired off and mated and are currently raising fry. Has anyone here has any experience with these fish? As I have found little on the web or in the library about these fish. At the moment they are approx. 6 1/2 inches long (nom) I know they can get to 12" in the wild. My hope is that they get larger when i move them to a new 265 gal. tank. Any responces would be appreciated.

I had three Red Hooks. One died shortly after I brought them home. I got a deal from the LFS. They must have been a trade because they were badly beat up. The two I have now are back to good health and are about 5" each now. I have them in a 55 with a couple of Severums.

There is not a lot of info on the web about these particular Dollars, but they are all pretty similar. Some require acidic water, but mine are doing fine in a PH of 7.8. I've read that these fish usually do not grow larger than 8" in captivity.

I'm not sure what your tank goals are, but I think it would be cool to add more Silver Dollar species when you move to the 265 gallon. They are skittish fish, I think the more you add to the shoal the more comfortable they would feel...and the more natural they would behave.

Thanks. It's nice to see someone else in the world has an affinity for these nice fish. I too have one large 7" severum in with these fish , along with two earth eaters and two baby red devils. Since the two have spawned all the other fish are cowering at the other side, including the red devils! I'll be moving the others to a 75 when its finished cycling in a couple days. I had planned on culling the fry to another tank and raising some for the lfs, and keeping four to put with the adults in the larger tank. I'm thinking an Amazon river tank. Should prove interesting stocking it that way.

I to have a couple of Red Hooks. Found some info. on them, although not much and basic, at fishprofiles.com. Mine got along go for awhile but now I've noticed in the last few days that one keeps chasing the other. Running him around and off for no reason. Beats me. Any ideas?

An Amazon river tank would be very cool. I would like to do that when I get a larger tank. You might want to trade the Red Devils in for some Acaras or Uaru, etc. They are too aggressive for your other fish (and being Central American, go against your theme).

Good luck with your spawning...
