My cousin's tank is covered in this red slime. He is having problems getting rid of it. He told me his salinity and all other params were in order but I decided to take my refratometer with me this weekend it read 40 ppt salinity would this cause the red slime or does anyone have any other ideas. I have some pic but don't know how to post them.

high salinity would not be the cause in red slime in any way.
There are some ways that lets it get out of control such as old bulbs, low spectrum bulbs, lots of direct sunlight, and low flow. However, when it all comes down to it, there is an excess of nitrate and phosphate in the water. Even if his params are all "good", in reality, they are not, because the redslime is thriving on something. It can often be lower because it is being used up as it is being produced.
Frequent water changes with RO/DI water in a non-overstocked and overfed tank along with a good phosphate remover should do wonders.

Chemiclean works, if you follow the directions corectly.

Suck up as much as possible.
Make sure the areas have good flow.
Cut photo period to the minimum.
Work on achieving 0 nitrates and phosphates.
Be consistant with the above and you can beat it rather quickly. Good luck, and try not to let it frustrate you too much, it's just one of those irritants alot of us have to deal with.
