I bought my first recap oranda from walmart, not really reading up on recaps, I just thought he was really cute. Coop isn't very big (maybe an inch without the tail?) and doesn't have a wen. My boyfriend bought me another one, from the same walmart, and he said he got him (stripes) from the redcap oranda tank as well. He doesn't have a wen, and barely has any red on his head... Is it a possibility they aren't redcap orandas? Or is it possible they're just not old enough to start developing them yet?
Most of the other fish in the recap tank don't seem to have wens either, maybe one or two have a tiny bit of growth...

I could be wrong here, but I am not entirely certain that you have a redcap oranda. It looks to me like a fantail with red and white markings. Usually, orandas will have a pronounced wen from a fairly young age that develops as they get older and can sometimes obscure the eyes. I'm certainly not a goldfish expert, but I really don' see a sign of a developing wen. The coloration of the tail also suggests to me that you may have a young fantail, but not a redcap oranda.

That's what my thoughts were after buying them. Today I was in petsmart (getting a female betta) and they had redcap orandas that looked exactly the same. I asked the fish expert how old they were and she said 2 months. They were in with black moors, but the black moors actually looked proper, with the exception of one, which had gold spots.

If you get the Moor with orange spots, chances are pretty good that it will turn into an orange telescope as an adult. I have one of those.

Even though your fish isn't a red cap, it's still a very attractive fish.

Thanks, I think they're rather cute. My boyfriend said he could see me turning into a crazy fish lady instead of a crazy cat lady. Maybe in 2 weeks I'll get the moor, seeing as I recently added my not-recap, lol.

As others have said, it doesn't look much like an oranda. They do tend to develop a wen as they mature, but even the body shape seems atypical. I'd expect a deeper body, perhaps more rounded.

I'm far from an expert, but I do have recent experience with a fish (from Petsmart) was supposed to be an oranda, and I had me guessing for quite a while:

I might see a wen on this one yet. :)

Oh wow! Your fish is gorgeous!

Nice little fish you have. Even if it is just a fantail.

I have been trying to find a red cap oranda for a long time. No one around here sells them. And when I ask them to order any, they say they only buy the oranda assortment. About 15 years ago you could find them at any petshop..

So if I continue to buy these fantails, and one of them turn out to actually be an oranda (walmart or petsmart may actually label something correctly for once!) it's safe to keep them together? I was going to put the orandas (now fantails) with some moors or telescopes...
