Redoing a 10 gallon

I decided I was getting tired of how bad my 10 gallon tank looked so I ordered some onyx sand and a few plants to redo it. This tank is actually my quarantine tank that I keep cycled with a few fish and drop off cuttings in to from my 55 gallon tank. I *inherited * the lively looking gravel from my sister.... <heehees> She likes treasure chests that bubble too.:)

Anyhow, here is how it looks right now.

Well if you are looking for some ideas, check out my website, I've done two planted 10 gallon tanks, and working on another brakish setup.
 
I really like the ten with the rasboras. :) I'm planning to put my rasboras in this tank along with a couple of otos and two cories.

Then I guess I'll need to get another ten gallon for quarantine? Naw... I have enough room in my other 20 gallons to accomodate the ten gallon occupants if I need a quarantine.
 
Yea that was the first one I setup, I wish I can setup another one like that, but when I moved I sold everything and kind of startiting over again and don't have the money to go thatt nice. So right now just have 10 AGA with hood (15watt), and Penguin filtter, just have sand and plastic plants.

I think I'm gonna get a puffer and do a little brakish system. And tthen in ttime I will add live plants to replace fake, and maybe put money into it, but I doubt it.

I wish I could setup another one though

Also anybody got a 50 wattt heater for sale?
 
Guess I won't do any planting in this murk tonight. Even after rinsing and re/rinsing in a pillowcase my tank looks like a foggy night in London. The Seachem people *do* at least give you a forwarning on the package that the onyx will cloud the tank. :)

Don't worry... There aren't any fishies in the tank right now. :D
 
do half water change everyday till it gets clear, what kind of lighting you using?
 
Actually, it's already starting to clear. The 10 gallon tank has only 1.5 watts per gallon and I use DIY CO2 with a PlantGuild Vortex reactor. Plants will be Marsilea quadrifolia, Anubias nana, java moss, java fern, Crypt wendentti bronze, and some Wisteria and Cabomba in the back for now.. I may end up pulling that out later on because it tends to *takeover* the small tank.
 
do you get a lot of algae growth?

Because I feel that with 1.5 watts/gal, that supplementary co2 isn't needed, or helpful

My first tank I had that amount and had algae problems, then I went up to DIY 4 watts/gal and algae disappeared and the plants overtook it in a week. The growth is ridculous, so fast.
 
I have some algae but it has actually improved since I started using the CO2 and making sure my nutrients were up to par when I did my weekly water changes. I found I was trying to run the tank with a definite deficiency even in nitrate and phosphate. The stem plants were doing the best. My substrate just wasn't supporting the rooted plants well. When I pulled out my crypt wendenti, the roots must have been six or seven inches long but spread out shallowly since they had no where else to go.
 
It's mostly cleared now and I've planted it. :) The rock wasn't an intended part of the tank but one piece of driftwood still remained obstinate about floating. Before someone asks, the tall spikes in front are Marsilea quadrifolia. The plant is shipped as an emmerse grown plant which is taller than it's submersed form. I'll cut off the tall spikes in a week or so.
