OK my house yesterday inside got up to 74 degrees F and that caused my 90 Gallon Reef to go up to 84 degrees F... I was worried so I opened my hood and it never went above 84 degrees.

My fans in my hood are very weak and I have halides so I just bought online some 2 fans that are 28.8 CFM and are 20.9 dba so I hope I will get allot of air flow and very little noise...

During the summer I do use my central air to keep the house cooler for myself but i am worried one slip up and there goes my reef...

What is the temp that if the tank goes above = BAD...

And what do you guys do to keep your reef's at a good temp...

Chillers are EXPENSIVE man I do not want to buy one but if there is no other way then that is what I have to do....

It never matters if you had any heating problems or not, your having them now. Also these fans, either their smaller fans or not will depending on them for fans do take a long while to help to cool the tanks water any and then when your in the hot month periods, these fans can be running 24/7 and still you could see over heating still, least of all during the day and then your tank lights come on which not help madders any. You could also get yourself very large zip lock bags and fill with ice cubes and place in your sump. Also if your tank top is closed in, hopefully your a canopy where you can leave open the front to open your glass covers as well.

Chillers will depend on which room this is and also if your a problem, that heat for some reason seats in that room to which then, a chiller you not want then for you wouldn't see any changes other then that the room temp itself are higher. I know this from personal experiences. So hopefully that your no jumpers.

The fans can run for days and you might only see a temp drop of only a few degrees. Also the MH will work against this, im sorry :coffee:

What temperature does your system normally run at? Temp swings of three to four degrees are pretty typical in wild shallow reefs depending on the time of year and sunlight intensity.

If that is all you are seeing (3-4 degrees) especially with a soty dominated tank, I wouldn't worry about it.

My temp in the tank is usually at 79 at night and 81 - 82 durring the day. I a leaving my hood open durring the day for now until my new fans get here... My fans will put alot more air into the hood cooling that down and i hope that helps some...

Durring the heat of the summer i use the central air, so my problem is not the hot summer its the inbetween months where its not really central air time...

I also do not have any fans in my sump or refugium... My LFS said to add some and that will also help keep the tank a little cooler...

When my tank temp got high last year, I floated some bags of ice cubes on the water, raised my lights (they sit on the tank) and this year I've got a floor fan parked at the end of my tank which has already been on this month (it's only spring!).

My tank is constantly at 81-83 F most of the time just slightly over 82. In the winter, and its F-F-F-F-F-F-F-F-F-F-F-REEZING!! where I am in the winter, the temp is actually a tad bit higher like 82-84. I don't know why that is. It's definately not a problem though. Now Spring is finally starting here and the tank temp is a tad bit over 82.

Well this morning when i woke up i checked the temperature in the room of the aquarium and it was 67 F. I then checked the Aquarium and it was 83 F. I have never seen it that high befire after night so i checked my heaters and one of them was on even though i have it set for 79. I unplugged and removed that heater, maby that was the problem...

I also last night removed my hood completly so that i can install more/new fans in the hood for better airflow... i may invest in a chiller in time but right now cannot afford is seeing i am getting married in june...
