remove overflow?

I've got a couple questions that i'm hoping to get a consensus of opinion. I just came across a 90g bow-front with the built-in megaflow. I want to set it up as planted freshwater and as such i've got 2 questions...
1. what good would setting up a freshwater with an overflow & wet-dry or sump system do (that is, what benefit would justify the plumbing & power use) - and if i want plants in this tank i understand a wet-dry will remove CO2?
2. if there's no use to #1 above, then what are thoughts on cutting out the overflow and plugging the pre-drilled holes? (I know, people pay extra to have these put in and here i am talking about removing it). That way the tank space is opened up, and if i ever wanted to set up a saltwater again i could just silicone it back in.

Well, I suppose I could just plug the bulkheads that are there, but that leaves me with 2 things i'm trying to avoid - 1. the overflow takign up space in the aquarium wehn i'm not using it and 2. the 'dead water' behind the overflow. I suppose i could just put a small powerhead with a hose down in the bottom of the overflow to pump water back up & out to avoid any stagnation.
here's a link to the all-glass mega-flow site. i was told this tank was an oceanic, but this is the overflow i have. But since i can't find where all-glass ever made a 90 bow front i'm not sure now who was the mfr.:huh:

You could use the over flow to your advantage. It could be the area you install your heaters or other suction and discharges for a cleaner tank look.
 
Now that's an idea. Let me ponder that a bit; i think that would be the easiest option. plug the bulkheads & go. I've got two Eihem 2227 filters laying around and I was also planning on using one of these. Any thoughts on those?
 
Eheim has a good reputation. My next large tank will have false corners and a box in the middle for all heaters, suctions or discharges so they do not show. I am going to make them from acrylic that is the same color as the back of the tank.
 
I'm going through the same thing right now, I've pretty much decided to use mine for filtration. I have a thread on the general freshwater section 'how would you filter this?'
 
i have a 90g pre drilled with corner overflow.
i temp plugged the holes with bulkhead/pvc with caps.
i would keep the overflow just to save yourself from kicking yourself later on if you decide you want to use sump system or saltwater.
my overflow is in the corner so it doesnt take too much away from the volume of the tank, but i do wish it was centre so i could hide some junk behind it (heaters etc.)
Another piece of advice i have been given about the tank is to sell it, and buy a slightly larger non drilled tank if i plan on never doing SW.
 
Thanks for the reply & info. I'm wondering now how i could use it to my advantage and put in a MJ1000 at the bottom with some egg-crate layers to form a filter as the water falls down to the pump. need to noodle that some more...
