Quick question, i own a jewel rio aquarium with the internal filter boxed in the corner. I recently saw one for sale on ebay and the owner had removed the casing completly from the tank. This would be brilliant if i could do it as i now have a new self contained filter and dont need to internal section anymore. If anyone has some advice on if i can remove it at all and if so how do i go about doing it without damaging the tank.
Thanks alot

Laura

When it comes to general questions concerning types of equipment and their application, name brands such as Juwel Rio are not important. What you want to focus on is equipment type and their associated names, in this case a common rectangular aquarium and a simple common internal filter from what what I see on the Juwel Rio homepage.

In this case you can use any type filter you want (internal, canister, HOB, sump, exc) and can either replace or augment that internal filter (one of the most inexpensive entry level type). If you do decide to buy a different filter recommend an extrnal type as a replacement to save room inside the tank and and better looks.

I do not recommend any modifications to any designed filter by removing or add a part unless you are so familiar with the equipment that the need to ask why is not really necessary. If you have doubts about a DIY modification, its best not to do it without expecting some problems that could be costly

From what I see on the Juwell homepage the tanks and stands look pretty attractive, congratulations!

Thank you for replying. I have owned the tank for several years and i am not modifying the filter itself. The tank merely comes with its own filter which is housed along with the heater in a black rectangular casing unit in the back corner of the tank. However the pump to the filter in my tank packed in about a year ago and rather than buying the same one again i invested in a fluval filter which sticks with suckers to the tank wall as it was on offer at the time and a real bargain. However as the casing for the old filter is still stuck in the back corner of the tank with what i believe is glue, i was hoping i could remove it as with that and the new filter in the tank they are using up alot of room. I was just looking for someone who had maybe already removed this casing from their tank to offer some advice on how to remove it so that i dont damage the glass sides of the tank. Sorry if my first post didnt quite explain properly what i was after.

they are stuck on with silicone the and i got mine off with a craft knife with a thin blade and lots of patience as both sides have about 6 big blobs of silicone

Thanks for your help, I had a go at getting it off last night and wasn't as complicated as I thought, came away from the glass really easily just took a while longer to pry the remaining silicone off the glass. Looks much better now there's more space and one less place for my crabs to try and escape lol cheers!!
