Rena 300 air pump noise

I just bought a Rena 300 air pump, paying the extra cash because of the supposed noise level of the pump. It’s my second day running the pump now and the thing is just as loud as other air pumps I’ve tried that were half the price. The pump is running to a gang valve and is driving two air stones. I’ve had the pump under the aquarium and above the aquarium, no change. I’ve had it powering just one airstone, no change. About the only way I can have the noise tolerable is to turn the air flow all the way down, but then it doesn’t drive the airstones.

How is everyone’s experience with these? Unless I come up with a solution I’m going to return it. Did I just get a bad pump, or is there a noticeable noise level? I don’t have a sound meter, but there is no way this is the claimed 30 DB at 1 meter that the instructions state.

Im at 1m frrom my tank and cant hear a thing. Its quite, too quite :) Anyways I have two Rena pumps, the first one was quite right off the bat, the second was very noise for about a week. After about 8 days it dropped dead. I returned it to the store and the new was was quite just like the first one.

I think that you should return it to the store just in case. You never know what will happen next.

I have a couple of them... I don't use air pumps much any more other than to aerate an aging tank, but when I was running several the Rena's were pretty quiet. They weren't silent by any means, but considerably quieter than the others.

I don't know what you consider 'tolerable' (or not) but it doesn't sound like the air pump is working correctly. Is there any change if you open the gang valve all the way (or remove it completely)?

I've had the Gang valve fully open, half open, etc... Also removed it to see if it would make a difference, but no go. The Rena drowns out the sound of my 2 Emperor 400's, which aren't the quietest filters in the world. I'm going to return it, now if I can just convince Big Al's it's defective...

I have a Rena 200, completely silent. Bought a Rena 300 a couple of weeks ago, and it was very loud. I took it back the next day. Not sure what's with the 300s.

Forgive me for the obvious suggestion, but is it loud because it's vibrating against the surface of whatever it's on? Putting it on the bottom of a tank stand with a hollow base may make it seem louder. Try putting it on a large piece of foam and make sure that nothing else (including tubes and wires) is touching it.

I have 2 Rena 400's. One is running now and on a 4 way gang valve with two connects operating. It is as loud as my Million Air for my 75 Gal.... Hmmmm... I was a bit surprised it was not quieter....

Maybe it's just luck if you get a quiet or noisy Rena air pump. I have a Rena 200 and it is just about silent. I tried 2 other brands first and they were way too noisy, I could hear them all over the house. I run 3 bubble decorations and don't have the air turned up too high because my fish don't seem to like a lot of fast water.

I put the thing on a towel and no audible difference. It would appear to be an internal noise. The unit is well built, nice thick heavy base, four spiked feet for contact and the thing is large. With my hand lightly on it, there is no noticable vibration, so I would say that there is some internal mechanism that is making the noise.
