Gotta question about the xp1 and xp2. The xp1 says it runs 250gph, xp2 300gph. How much does the media in the cannister slow down water flow in these guys?
I have a 29gal that I'm going to put two penguin powerheads in(one's a 660 the other is a bit slower) on a reverse ugf and then a xp1 or 2. I'd like to get the 2 but it is still more $ than the 1 and if the 1 will definitely do the job then I will get it, if not the 2.
P.S. I do love to over stock my tanks, but some of that is for molly and guppy fry to trade at my lfs.

The XP1 will probably fit the bill. The differential in flow rates with media loaded is usually offset by the fact that the tank won't actually be holding 29 gallons of water when you take into account plants, substrate, decorations, fish etc. A;; of that stuff displaces water volue.
 
Yes and no. You say you plan to use it in conjunction with an RFUG so that will make the tank overfiltered. I, however, think overstocking is always a bad idea because filtration does not equal water changes. Fish waste, no matter how much filtration you have, remains in the system until a gravel vac and water change and cleaning of mechanical media takes place. In my opinion no amount of filtration makes up for water changes, and most especially in an overstocked environment.
 
I have no plan to forgo water changes or cleaning, I just want to try and keep "floatys" down between them since everything will go up from the gravel not down to be contained.
But thank you for the bat to the head, I just enjoy all of the motion without having to follow a fish around the tank, unless I am watching a particular fish.

Have you perchance tried schoold of small shoaling fish? Lemon and cardinal tetras are particularly interesting and colorful, add motion and as a school allow your eyes to focus on the tank as a whole rather than watching one particular fish move around the aquarium. You can often plan around a school or two in decent-sized tanks so as not to overstock. Just a thought, not a bat to the head. ;)
 
I had neons at one point in time long ago, but I've never seen cardinals around here and sorry but lemons are kinda of washed out. I actually saw some black phantom tetras this week at the store, but I don't know how they are for schooling.
I think once I get the rest of my fish into my 29 gal and get the 10 cleaned up I'm going to move the guppies in there and trim the mollies down some, try for some selective breeding for both. ;)
 
I bought the Xp2 for my 29g temporarily while I am waiting to set up my 75g. I will be using the XP2 on the 75g and am confident I will have enough filtration for it (I also understock my tanks). I have to have the XP2 on the very lowest flow rate so it doesn't create to much of a current for my fish. I does an excellent job even at that.

I would recommend the Xp1 for your 29g and as Harlock said, if you add the other filters you will be very overfiltered. Personally I think the Xp1 will be all the filtration you need and if you want to compensate for overstocking you should do that with cleanings and water changes, not over filtering.
