Ok, how many other people out there under the age of 25 seem to be getting lame excuses when it comes to trying to find apartments?
I am 22, my BF is 23. We have been together for 2 years and are making a combined income of $3200/mo. We have been at our current apartment for over a year and have made all our payments on time.
Recently I applied for an apartment, filled out the app. the apartment I was looking at hadn't even been advertised before I applied for it.
But when it came time for the actual paperwork I got a call-back from this landlord who left a lame messege saying she "Didn't want to be taking too much of my money" And that my references "Were just not strong enough"
-I checked 2 out of 3 of my references and they said they were never called
WTF?!?!? Did I miss something? How is $825/mo for an apartment too expensive for a couple who makes a combined income of $3200/mo?
Grrrrraaarrrrggg! Just wondering if anyone else seems to find this same issue coming up.

yeah, I just brushed it off. We're just gonna stay where we are (525/mo all utils included) and try to save up for a down payment on a small house or trailer. There really isn't much available in this area as far as affordable rent goes that also allows pets.

Good idea. If you're willing to pay over $800 month, then a mortgage is the only way to go. I make about $3500/month and I wouldn't want to be paying over $800/month on rent on my income alone. I would gladly split it though with a roomate/spouse/girlfriend, however.

I agree, if you have the money, ivest in owning property. Ever since I bought my first house, I swore I'd never go back to renting.... it's way more economical if you can own

Yup, DD and Slappy hit the nail--if you can buy, do it!! Altho, I'll caution, buying a trailer is same as buying car--only depreciates (I'm still paying on one). UNLESS you buy land with it!!!!! Good luck.

Rosita, you're right. And even with land, (depending on the trailer) it may only break even...

We are in the same age/pay bracket. No problems with renting... I'm thinking this neighborhood might not have young people and he just wanted to blow you off in a rather rude way. I've seen areas that don't want children but it can happen that the landlord is worried about loud music or parties as are the common stereotypes of our age-group.

In a year I hope to get a home. I'm not sure if I want to wait and pay off some loans first or jump into it... I think I will pay off at least one of the loans and see where things go from there.

My biggest concern with getting a home: having enough for a decent downpayment, unexpected expenses, the need to buy a refrigerator and washer/dryer for the first time. I don't like doing things on credit... Hence my major desire to pay off our 2 loans....

Yeah we had the same problem... but it was while we were looking at basement suites. We could tell right away we were not welcome, and I know it was because we were young.
We found an apartment, but if anyone's read my car troubles thread, they would know we're getting out of here asap.
