Hello so today I bought a 55gal setup from a garage sale type thing, basically it came with a bunch of stuff and the guy didnt know anything about fish tanks and didnt care so I paid $20 for it all lol. It came with a canister filter which I was excited about and the motor in it works when I plugged it in but I cant seem to get it to suck water. granted all I did was put one end in water and one end in a bucket and plugged it in idk anything more about it than that. I also cant figure out how to open the canister itself... if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated! heres some pics of it after I took the top off but still cant get into the canister.

Did you try to fill the canister first?

My Fluval has a hard time starting up with air in the system. I use a pump that i use for WC's connected to the input to basically bleed out the air.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just filled the cannister up all the way now and the motor sounds like its bouncing off the walls of its chamber... and it wont stuck up/push out water. How can I fix it??

You need to prime it, take all of the water out of the can, make sure the input side is under water and all valves are open, now take the out put side(if you have a spraybar remove it, you can put it back on when done) now make a fist and grab the output tube then suck with your mouth to hand with the other end of your fist holding the tube, you don't wanna suck on the nasty used tube do ya? Give it one good sucking :) and water should start filling the can up. Wait until gravity does its thing and fills the can with water it should stop at some point, when it stops put your spraybar back on and start er up!
Hope this helps, is the most primitive way to prime a can but the most easiest method out there!

THANK YOU! Ill let you know if this works but this is the advice I was looking for! lol it says "self priming" but its old and probably not 100% so Hopefully itl still work if I can help it along

Hmm don't know much about hydor cans but this method works for every canister I have encountered. Be sure the power is off during the priming and let us know how it went!
