I had a 70 gallon tank that sprung a leak, I've since removed the fish (which are all baby africans) and put them into a 35 gallon holding tank. I've purchased a new 75 gallon tank and I'm ready to setup again. Should I leave the cichlids in the 35 gallon tank and completely recycle the 75 gallon tank, or is it okay to dump the 35 cycled gallons into the tank and then add say another 35 gallons of fresh water? I did treat the 35 gallon tank with some medicine for a fish with popeye so I guess the water is not at it's best as it's yellowish in color due to the tablets. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you keep the filter from the 70gal running on the 35 gal? If so, I would probably just switch the filter back onto the new 70 gal, put in maybe 15 gal from the 35 gal and then fill with fresh water, just make sure its the same temp and dechlorinated if necessary.

that would be fine as long as you use the filter from the old 70g tank, or another tank, because the most important part is the bacteria in the filter media that break down the ammonia, nitrates, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I did use the Eheim canister filter I had been using. I put it on the 35 gallon tank until I got the 75 gallon tank in place. The good news is that all the fish survived and they are doing well. Thanks again.
