Hehe, yeah I'm pretty familiar with SW tanks, but oddly enough, not FW. So what has to be added? Do you have any examples of products or anything like that?
ahhh. sorry about that/ lol
there is a product called electro-right that adds needed ions that an RO/DI would probably remove.
and then some produces such as pH adjusters are needed for certain freshwater fish such as discus and cichlids
(PS: i dont really know much about freshwater either. lol. so i'm sure they may be able to tell you more over in the freshwater section. haha.)
why would RO be better? RO only takes out about 80% (of course, with a few variables... but on average) while DI takes out over 97%. RO is better for freshwater if you dont treat RO/DI. but RO/DI is by far superior.
i said that considering top offs and just freshwater uses.. the problems they can "cause" arent that bad :/.. that just what i like
theres no conditioning needed when using RO/DI.. You might need to "reconstitute" it if your using it in a freshwater tank but saltwater is pretty much ready to go
There's little need to recondition RO/DI -- that is what the salt mix is for. As for topping off, many people use that opportunity to mix kalk, alkalinity buffer, or calcium into RO/DI. Others just add the RO/DI straight.
