Hello. I found some nice big rocks in a bag in my room from the ocean, that I would like to put into my two freshwater aquariums. What should I do to clean them so they won't harm my fish?

Thanks for the Help!

Do you know what kind they are? Do a vinagar test with a few drops if it bubbles dont put it in your tank. Otherwise, scrub with hot water, boil for a good half hr, and this is usually unnecessary but I bake at 300 for an hour or so to make sure its sterile.

even though its from the ocean?

Im doing the vinegar test, and for a few rocks, it bubbled, but I could hear it, not see it. Can I still use those rocks?

I dont think you should be putting any rocks in your tank, which aren't clearly labelled for aquarium use. You have no idea what chemicals those rocks have absorbed, even soaking them may not completely remove all the toxins. My advise is use em to start a rock garden and go down to your local pet store and get rocks which you know are SAFE. If you must use these particular rocks then try them in a test tank with a few/one fish after you've cleaned the rocks well with boiling water ofcourse, make sure you dont use any soap to clean the rocks either.

ok, I'm doing the vinegar test and a few of them are bubbling like crazy, so i wont use those

Ocean rocks are actually better, as parasites found on them are salt loving and would die anyway in a freshwater tank. There was a recent post on safe rocks even hade pictures.

What about rocks from my yard? I did a vinegar test on all of them, threw the bubbly ones outside, and boiled all of the other ones one at a time for a half hour.

Find out what kind they are first would be the best, backyard rocks just need more scrubbing, i soak any rocks like those for several days.

2 of them are granite, and the other two are sedimentary. The rest of the rocks are from the ocean. I really don't know the types of rock they are.
