Room to "grow"...pun intended.

Based on my problems with the 260w Coralife fixture in my other thread, I am thinking of switching over to the 520w Orbit Extreme. Now, my tank is 72" long, but I must go with a 48" hood because of my canopy. So, the sides of the tank are always going to be darker - low light plants should do fine. I was planning on 2wpg with the 260w fixture, low light/easy plants, and no pressurized Co2 (or at least not right away). But now that I have an oportunity to change lights, I'm thinking of the Orbit Extreme with 520w which would put me at 4wpg - pressurized Co2 and high maintenance plant growth. But here's my thought - I won't use one bank for now....just 260w at 2wpg for low light/easy plants and Flourish Excell. See how my green thumb developes, see how I like it, and if I want to try higher light/more difficult plants with pressurized Co2, I have it - I can just turn on the second 260w bank for 520w and 4wpg. Any thoughts?

For long tanks that standard tubes do not "cover", I stagger the mounts such that the ends are less bright but still lighted. Plant selection by light need takes care of the rest - lower light plants at ends, higher light plants in the central portion where the lighting is stronger.

With PCs, you can select different sizes and juggle the placement to get pretty even lighting throughout the length of the tanks. Check out AHSuppy kits. Quite handy for the non-adept DIYer. http://www.ahsupply.com
