I've read a lot of information about standard liquid fertilizers, but very little about root fertilizers. Are they necessary for all plants? How many of you use them? Any information is of course welcome. Thanks!

These are used for plants that take the nutrients directly from the substrate, such as stem plants.
What exactly is a stem plant? I mean, all plants have some sort of stem unless it's something like java moss.

I just bought some of this. I wish I'd gotten the liquid but oh well. :( Will it work at all for my java fern? I know it doesn't have roots really, but it has sent out shoots all through the substrate so it must be getting something out of there.

I went ahead and stuck a tablet under there; just hoping someone here can tell me something encouraging.

Root tabs should only really be used for plants with heavy root systems such as swords. Most stem plants and plants with their rhizomes and roots above the substrate(java fern and anubias) get their nutrients from the water column. If root tabs have contact with the water above the substrate this can cause major algae outbreaks.

Stem plants are often just a single stock per plant where something like a sword is more like a fan with all the leaves connecting at the top of the roots.

Stem plants are those that are not bulbs and do not have rhizomes, such as onion plants or anubias. The tall single stem leavy plants are "stem" plants. Bunny13 makes a good point about heavy root systems.
