I bought a Ropefish a few days ago and I have a question:

I bought him and he had a small white patch about the size of a tic-tac that looked kind of like dry skin or a scab of sorts. Now 2 days later, he has developed a little bit of redness on the topmost edge and he seems to try and "bump" it with his nose sometimes. He is eating fine and swimming normally, and none of the other fish in the tank bother him. Here is a picture today:

That's the white area. It seems kinda transparent and there is just barely some red appearing. The eel doesn't have any white stuff on his head, that's just snail goo making the sand stick to his face.

Can anyone determine what it is? I've read once Ropefish start getting sick its VERY tough to bring them back so I want to get this sorted out quick!

It looks like loose scales it might just be a scratch. I know when fish get wounds it gets white and does that. Keep the water super clean and watch for him to get worse. You can probably do a antibacterial to make sure it doesn't get infected. It's hard to tell though from a picture. If its very fuzzy it might be a fungus.

I just did my routine water change about 50% every 3 weeks, then i treated with some water conditioner to help heal him up. Its not fuzzy at all I don't think it's a fungus. the LFS man i talked to told me it was probably some sort of scratch from a rock of the hard gravel they had, so I hope it goes away. Thanks

So my thought was the same as his. As long as it's not fuzzy and doesn't spread just watch him. Think of it as a scab on a human. We get hurt we scab when it heals we shed the skin and scab and new skin is underneath. He will probably shed some scales and skin in the area and might be a little off color for a little bit but should be fine with time. Just gotta make sure he doesn't get it infected, living in water makes it much easier to get infected.

I disagree. i have seen such conditions when improperly shipped/delay in transit. Exposure to low pH, etc may have caused and it can get lot worse.
As you mentioned, if it is getting larger, should treat with antibiotic.

What kind of antibiotic do you have? Can it be isolated with good cover?
with an assumption that tank is well matured tank, What is pH of your water?

It isn't getting larger, its actually gotten more transparent (or disappearing), but a little redness has appeared like he was almost itching it. It hasn't gotten any worse over today. I bought and treated the tank with Big Al's water conditioner with aloe vera to "promote the healing of skin wounds and torn fins". My PH is 7.2, I only have a 5.5g tank currently not in use so he'll have to stay where he is, and the tank he is in has been up with no problems for more than 2 years. I've done some researching and most facts point to a physical injury so I'll be watching/treating it as such

Like I said, pretty common symptoms with ropes after long long trips, cooked up in the Box from Africa. Have seen it on numerous occassions.

I hope it is something minor/simple injury (doubt it though).
