Rusty's acting strange?

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out why my Rusty's are hiding in the rocks? The 29G tank has been up and running for several years with five Rusty's in it. Up until now I've never observed anything like this. I performed a 30% water change on Saturday, (which is normal), on Sunday I noticed they had all disppeared ... hiding in the rocks only peeping out every once in a while then darting back in. Normally as soon as I approach the tank they would be dancing about at the top of the tank "begging" for food.

As far as I can tell they look healthy ... active, no clamped fins. When I fed them they didn't even come out to feed ... they occasionally dart out grab a piece of food and dart back ... but most of the food settled on the rocks and gravel.

I checked the water quality ... looks really good. I haven't changed the food or the way I make up the change water, (salt + Af. Cich salts). The only change I have made recently is adding a bag of Carb Sea African Substrate to the existing gravel about 3 weeks ago. There are no other fish in the tank. It's very strange to walk into the room and see a crystal clear tank full of rocks and a few bubbles with no fish. Any ideas? Thanks.

Has the pH or other parameters on your tap water changed?

The tank ph went up from around 8.1 to ~ 8.6 when I added the Carib Substrate about three weeks ago. Since then it slowly fell back to ~8.1 .... which is where it historically has always been. I checked the tap water it is as usual about 7.8. I didn't notice any change in the fish behaviour until Sunday.

How about some of the other possible things that could change on your tap water...

ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, chlorine, chloramine, phosphates?

If unsure, I'd check with the public works to see if they have switched or increased their additives, if for nothing else, to eliminate causes.

What conditioner do you use?

I'm sure the water is good ... I filter it before I add salts, let it age 24 hours and heat it up. I think I figured out the reason for the bizarre behaviour .... I noticed a lone fry on the rocks ... about 3/8" long. I'm pretty sure there will be more. Very odd behaviour!
