saddled shrimp

Yup. The "saddle" is their ovary and, just like female persons, they are born with eggs in it.

What happens to the eggs if the female gets to puberty and molts and there is no male to fertilize them is a question I must defer to the more experienced RCS hands here.

My 4 are just babies yet but I may face this problem myself--3 are very, very, very definitely girls and the 4th is "I dunno yet." It has a very small very slightly darker patch in the saddle area but it's almost like a widening of the red line down their backs. I am holding out hope that he is my Stud Shrimp and soon to be patriarch of an expanding empire. :)

Well speaking from my years of being around females you could expect major mood swings, Hours of doing nothing but sitting in the moss, Continual figeting and searching the tank for that perfect piece of food, Picking constantly at the snails or other tank mates asking why me, Maybe even suicidal tendencies by constantly running into the filer stream and hoping to be swept away to somewhere better.

Other than that I have never had a female without a male so I couldn't tell ya.

I am gonna catch so much flack over this... Just know I tried to hold back but my fingers on the keyboard had a mind of their own.... :y220d:

if there are no males in the tank there will be no eggs.

RCS actually um... "do it"

the females will become saddled, but without a male there will be no eggs
:iagree: i have seen the same thing occur. they only produce eggs after mating.

thanks, I only am sure that I have two females, RCS. I don't know if I have males, I guess I'll find out huh?
