I think that would depend. I mean you could get fake drift wood. Some of the stuff I have seen looks so close to the real thing. Besides that I think you should be able to get drift wood that wouldn't stain the water, but it is whatever you want your tank to look like, after all you will be the one viewing it the most and you want to have it look pleasing to you.
i set up a 55 gal with black subtrate and a black back drop i added a school of neons and they really showed up good but it was just too much black for me it looked very drerry after about two weeks i changed it to vegatation back drop i like it lots better the black subtrate looks very good with the neons
id agree the back subrate and black background can get alittle dreary. a friend on mine has that with jsut a few pieces of driftwood. the green of plants i think helps to light it up and make it look better.
I've been thinking about MAYBE doing some real plants in there...I know i have a low light I'm not sure exactly the wattage on it But does anyone know some easy to care for,Low light plants? I was thinking maybe java moss or java fern?
When it comes to choosing/aranging decorations I suggest trial and error. Find out what you enjoy looking at as you will be the one viewing it every day =)
As far as decorations from outside, I would be very cautious. There are many things that seem benign but may alter your water chemestry.
I agree that they are way overpriced at the LFS for their decorations. I definatly dont want the whole skeleton holding the chest of gold bit in there....haha and they dont have much of a selection past that.lol. I'm curious if I put a piece of driftwood will it make the water look tea-ish?
I think it depends on the driftwood. The piece that I have in mine hasn't turned the water "tea-ish". You can look from one side to the other (48") without any haziness at all or discoloration at all. Although I'm not sure excactly what kind of wood it is, all I know is that it is hardwood native to my area.

Quick idea for your centerpiece: if you want a cheap centerpiece, you could buy tumbled (smooth) stones at your local pet store along with some silicone aquarium sealant, and create your own designs. I've done it...the only problem is that it takes a little bit for the sealant to dry, so you have to do it in steps.
Good luck!
lol bobble head would definatly be an eyecatcher...haha I like those Natures Image decorations at the LFS they look like real coral very very pretty...also very expensive lol.
You might take a look around on ebay, or other auctions sites, to see if you can find any decorations that fit your tastes. People are always breaking tanks down and selling things off, sometimes you can find great deals on anything from decorations, to tanks and even fish.
