Im thinking about going with a sand bottom. What is the best way to clean the sand? I currently use a vaccuum hose for the gravel but I would assume that the sand will be sucked up with the hose. ???

I have had sand for the past year or so and now have 3 tanks with sand bottom. To be honest I don't clean it that much. Any big crap you see on it just siphon it out. Some tanks I use my hand to stir up the sand every so often. THis probably was not that helpful, but it should be a start for you.
I have had it for 6 mths and love it. It is so much cleaner, just vac the surface.
I really love argonite but it's more $ than Home Depot etc sand. It is lighter and doesn't compact or get layers. I do put my vac all that way in it and pull it out, some goes in the drain but not much.
As for washing it in the winter, that's the hard part. I did it in the sink and I hope I didn't mess the kitchen pipes up! Little bits at a time works best.
I haven't had any problems with my HOB filters in the sand or in the argonite sand. I had sponges on the filter intakes but took them off. If I stir the sand I shut the filters off but only for about a minute.

I have sand in several tanks and use maylasian trumpet snails to keep it stirred and clean.They do a great job and usually only come out of the sand at night so in most of the tanks Im not aware of them most of the time
I have sand in mine also along with trumpit snails, I use my vacume and just go above the sand and sometime's stick it down in the sand as said above a small amount goes through but most all falls back out when you lift the vac out. I say go for it I love the look of sand!
